Question: A question came in today from Paul Weber, who has just attended the NLP Foundation Weekend: “I’ve tried the submodalities technique you showed us on two people so far, they were both wanting to stop smoking at a level of 8/10.  I went through the sheet you gave us.  My question is when u first swap the like to dislike, do u tell them from the beginning that they have to imagine the cigaret tasting horrible or once they have built those emotions up?”

Answer: If you get the ‘dislike’ as extreme as possible (Column 2), the dislike for smoking will happen automatically – you don’t need to add in anything else other than their own submodalities. When you do the swap – Column 2 onto column 1 – simply ask them to think about cigarettes and read down column number 2.  Over emphasise on tastes and smells. To get someone from an 8 to a 10 in wanting to give up – use questioning around money, health and family – Usually a motivator to change comes from one of those areas…
